Guide to IEP Preparation
Disclaimer: These suggestions are merely just that – suggestions. No legal advice is intended
Parents are encouraged to work with the rest of the IEP team in making decisions about their child's services.
-
Look over your child's current IEP. Has your child progressed with their goals and objectives? Are
there areas that seem to be missing?
-
What are your child's strengths? Are they listed in the IEP? Are interventions making use of those
strengths to help with the needs?
-
What are your child's needs? What areas has the school done a good job with meeting those needs? What
areas still need to be addressed?
-
Does your child need to be evaluated for assistive technology to help address unmet needs?
-
How is your child's behavior in school? Do the teachers enjoy your child or are they struggling?
Would a functional behavior assessment assist them in addressing some of the undesirable behaviors?
-
If needed, how can communication between parents and the school improve? Is there a notation in the
IEP on how this will be handled (back and forth book, etc)?
-
What training for parents, teachers, support staff is needed to address your child's needs?
Is this documented in the IEP?
-
In reviewing the goals and objectives, are they clear, measurable, and time-limited? Are all
areas of functioning addressed where needed?
-
Is the level and type of services sufficient to address your child's needs? Is the determination
made based on your child's needs or what the school is willing to provide?
-
What are other areas of concern that you would like addressed at the meeting? Do you have a plan to
schedule another meeting if running out of time or things become too adversarial?
-
Do you understand the assessments and test results that the team is developing the goals and
objectives from? Do you have copies of the test results before the IEP meeting for 3 year evaluations?
-
Do you need to bring anything from private therapists on evaluations or progress reports?
-
Have you addressed after school activities (homework, extra-curricular activities) if needed in the IEP?
-
Are accommodations/ modifications noted on the IEP? Are they being followed or do they need to be reworked?
-
Is your child eligible for extended school year services? Do you have documentation to support this if needed?
