The 2016 SEPAC Awards

The 2016 SEPAC Awards will be held Thursday, May 19, 7pm at Eliot Elementary School*

Each year, SEPAC recognizes  Needham Public School employees who are truly exceptional, and have gone above and beyond in their work with students with special needs. Award winners include teachers, specialists, administrators, and staff members who have been nominated by SEPAC members.

Administrator Discussion: MetroWest Adolescent Health Survey Results and Needham District Priorities
This survey gives an overview of both the physical and mental health of Needham students. Mary Lammi will join us to discuss the results of this important survey and how the district is addressing areas of concern. Also attending to present and answer questions:
- Tom Denton, Director of Guidance
- Elaine Tenaglia, Interim Director of Health Services
- Kathy Pinkham, Director of Wellness

SEPAC Business: Revision to Bylaws
We will be voting on proposed changes to the SEPAC bylaws to better reflect how the group currently operates.

Administrator Discussion: Review of proposed IEP fact sheets
Based on the conversations of our working group, we have drafts of fact sheets entitled "Referral for Evaluation" and "IEP Meeting" that we would like to share with the group. Additional sheets to be developed include "Extended School Year" and "Transition Planning."

SEPAC Business: 2016-17 Positions, SEPAC Awards
Spring is when we both recognize out standing educators at our annual SEPAC awards and start planning for next year. 

Parent Conversation: IEP Meetings
We will discuss keys to effective collaboration and opportunities for improvement.

Administrator Discussion: FY17 Budget and Special Ed Trends, Q&A with Mary Lammi
Mary Lammi, Student Support Services Director, will recap the presentation she and her team delivered at a recent School Committee meeting.  Topics will include the budget proposal for next year as well as trends in special education in Needham as compared to other communities and MA.  Mary will also answer any questions from parents on topics of interest.

Parent Conversation: Supporting After-school Activities and IEP Checklist for Transition to a New School
We will continue our conversation on ways to support children in after-school activities.  We will also work to develop a checklist of transition topics to discuss when a student is moving to a new building (entering kindergarten/High Rock/Pollard/HS), e.g. transportation, supplies, lunchroom seating.

Administrator Discussion: Transition to Adulthood

The transition to adulthood and the transition from the Needham school district to adult agencies is a complex one that starts with very early planning which includes a comprehensive transition plan beginning at age 14. Ilene Asarch, a transition specialist who works at Needham High School running the post-graduate program, will join us to discuss key considerations for planning for transition.   

In addition, we will get updates from administrators about standardized testing and next year's  school budget.

Administrator Discussion: School Transitions

From preschool through high school, Needham students switch schools several times, and each transition brings challenges. This discussion will be an opportunity to share your questions, concerns, and success stories around school transitions with parents and administrators.

Parent Conversation: Community Supports and Challenges
After the school day is done, there is a whole world of activities for our children — sports, parties, classes, and more. What supports would make your child more able to participate in these extracurricular activities?


October Business Meeting

All parents are encouraged to attend our monthly business meetings. From 9:30-10:30, we meet with administrators to discuss topics of common interest. At 10:30, parents remain for a guided conversation on the "topic of the month," which will help us determine agenda items for future meetings.
  • Administrator Discussion: Standardized Testing
    Special Education Directors will provide information and answer questions regarding the switch to PARCC. If data is available we may also discuss MCAS results from last year.

    What works? What could be improved?
